Water softeners are devices created to decrease the hardness of water. Water hardness is caused by high concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily magnesium. These minerals can cause a variety of problems, such as scaling in pipes and appliances, and uncomfortable skin and hair. Water softeners work by using a process called ion exchange.
